FREE to membersIt has only been in recent years that Bawdsey is once again being washed out by the sea, but this time it is a small cliff north of the famous (now overgrown) Red Crag cliffs. However, the London Clay on the foreshore is rich in fish, bird and shark remains.

FREE to membersWarden Point on the Isle of Sheppey is probably the most popular site for collecting London Clay fossils in the UK. This location is easily accessed, with lots of fresh fossils constantly being washed out. It is also famous for the wide variety of fossils, which can be found that includes everything from turtles, lobsters and crabs to sharks’ teeth, snakes, crocodiles, molluscs and plant remains.

Whitehaven, Cumbria (Fossil Hunt)

FREE to membersWhitehaven is one of the only places in the UK where fossil plants from the Carboniferous can be collected on the coast both on the foreshore and in the cliffs. This unique location can yield some well-preserved specimens.

Car Park on the day is £2 per headWhitman’s Hill quarry is a large disused quarry to the North of the Malvern Hills, leased by Herefordshire and Worcestershire Earth Heritage Trust. The geology of Whitman’s Hill Quarry dates to the Silurian period of time, approximately 428 million years ago. The rock types include limestones, siltstones and volcanic ash layers known as bentonites. The interesting rock formations and the abundance of fossils – mainly corals, brachiopods, trilobites, crinoids, algae and bryozoans makes the site popular with geologists, amateurs, children and adults. An accessible fossil collecting area has been created at the quarry, as well as leaflets for visitors, outlining the geology and wildlife of the site and its quarrying history.

Upper Gilwern Quarry, Wales (Fossil Hunt)

On the edge of the Brecon Beacons, Upper Gilwern Hill is a site long known for its well-preserved and complete trilobites. The hill is made up of rocks from the Lower and Middle Ordovician, and the privately owned quarry is accessible to parties staying at the onsite Shepherd’s Hut self catering accommodation. The trilobite fossils here are plentiful and the chances of finding a good number is very high.

FREE to membersLlantwit Major is an excellent location in Wales for Jurassic fossils. The huge cliffs yield a wide range of fossils and unique is the large amount of marine life, for example corals and giant brachiopods and gastropods.
